Citroen Saxo 1.4i SX 5p / Ford Fiesta 1.25 16V Ghia 5p
Two selling renewing their appearance to continue to capture public attention. Both offer comfort, good space consumption and low price. Two models with petrol engine highly recommended for its price / quality.
The “Year 2000” has come to these two small cars as new face and improved equipment details, among other things. Veteranía Fiesta market and renewed competition have led Ford to make small tweaks to the front, then, in a rear view, almost no way to distinguish one from another. Inside, they have changed little details aimed at increasing comfort. This is a “facelift” until the future all-new Fiesta, which is for 2001. Something similar happens with the Saxo, which also receives a restyling in which the most important changes have taken place in the front new taillights and interior improvements, oriented as in the Fiesta, increase indoor comfort. If changes have been light in both models, prices are not too varied: stand out for an affordable price, which does not reach the million and a half pesetas in Saxo (applying the discount) and exceeds the Party, what obviously we must add the price of the options, interesting extras such as air conditioning, anti-lock brakes and front passenger airbag and side in the Party, the latter not available in the Saxo. In this sense we must clarify that Saxo price is more attractive, thanks to additional introductory discount (300,000 pesetas), but, like equipment (Fiesta has more standard equipment), the difference is reduced to 132,000 pesetas.
In motor dynamics and issues, both you get more than you pay for. Or more than initially expected. Nobody gives hard to peseta, but the behavior of both and consumption they offer is something noteworthy. In the case of the Fiesta worth pointing out various aspects. The first is that it is a frame with recognized efficacy and not only meets this utility, but serves as a basis for the coupe Puma, which gives an idea of its effectiveness. On the other hand, the gearbox is shorter than the Citroën developments. However, despite their greater real power, the greater weight does not allow you to prevail in accelerations. Both engines perform an official maximum power of 75 hp actual -84 Fiesta and 77 in the Saxo- but use two different engines. The Fiesta art, thanks to the technology of four valves per cylinder, is an engine that breathes better at high speeds and with a pleasant sound.
The gearbox greatly helps perform a semi-sporty driving. And, despite not being a powerful mechanics, road behavior encourages us to take the high engine turns. The touch of the lever is very nice with a very short and precise route, while management quickly and with great aplomb, filter the discomforts of the road and not transmitted to the driver’s hands asphalt potholes. The direction road is the scope it has the necessary firmness, although in town, and especially for parking maneuvers, it is somewhat hard. In Sax, 1360 cm3 engine cylinder head with two valves per cylinder announces the same power. This engine is mated to a manual five-speed gearbox with longer than Fiesta developments. If we talk about performance almost no differences between the two, as the acceleration and recoveries are very similar between each other: the Saxo compensates with its larger displacement the multivalve head of the Party and the result is very similar thrust from low revs, with a remarkable resilience. Citroen engine is unchanged compared to the previous generation, but has improved in that loudness and consumption refers. It has the advantage over the party to offer a more linear power and have 90 percent of maximum torque from just 1,500 laps.
