The best and worst tires, according to the OCU
The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has just published its annual report on summer tires, which analyzed a total of 32 models in two popular sizes: 195/65 R15 and 175/65 R14. Braking tests and grip, wet performance, test of consumption and respect for the environment … Which brands get the best results? And what the OCU recommended not to buy?
Goodyear, Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Hankook tires … and even those who’ve never heard of. It has not escaped or brand. After a thorough analysis, the OCU, the non-profit association that provides information and attention to the Spanish consumer, has already drawn up its annual summer tire. This time, the tests have targeted two specific measures (195/65 R15 and 175/65 R14), where they have tested no less than 16 different tire models in each one of them.
In its report, OCU divides its tests in three blocks. A first one analyzes the behavior dry asphalt. Specifically, values here bite, the stability changing lanes and cornering at 150 km / h, the braking distance 100 to 0 km / h and workability high speed; a second block where the value behavior in rain or wet soil to check, in addition to the foregoing also above its aquaplaning resistance this time both straight and curved. Finally, the OCU also appreciates duration, consumption and noise producing these tires. Here, the test takes a leading role.
After all these tests, OCU SoBe provides a total score 100 to assess what the best and worst tires are in each category, including those not recommend buying. How a tire cares?
Leveraging its annual summer tire, the OCU also emits a series of important recommendations for optimal care which also enables to extend the life of your tires.
a) Always keep the correct pressure. Check them when the tires are cold, because otherwise the gauge indicates a higher pressure.
b) Pressurizes and if you are carrying cargo more heavy. Tires in this regard have a recommended higher pressure to flow at full load.
c) Monitors provided the tread depth exceeds 1.6 mm. Otherwise, it is essential to change tires.
d) Do not install tires with different characteristics or wear level on the same axis.
e) Keep in good condition and always monitors the pressure of the spare wheel.
f) If you notice vibrations at high speeds, it is important that you check balanced.
