DGT: “Accidents are avoidable”

DGT: European Union provides road safety as a shared responsibility, ie, a commitment that must acquire the whole society.

Therefore, the DGT has indicated that its main action plans in the short term have focused on establishing deterrents for drivers with bad driving habits. Navarro noted that, so far, its main fields of action have been campaigns breathalyser, set as mandatory use of seat belts, punish the speed and try to re-educate the group of repeat offenders.

In the medium term, the DGT intends to have a plan of action at local level, involving civil society, as "accidents are not a price to pay for using cars, but they are preventable."

The director of the DGT has made these statements in UAN Safety Day held this Wednesday by the insurance company Liberty Seguros.

On this day there have been various studies, research and improvements on Road Safety, counting with numerous specialists.

Francisco Toledo, deputy director of the Research Institute on Traffic and Road Safety at the University of Valencia (INTRAS), said that "The only vaccine traffic accidents is to have good road safety education". This translates to convey to children values of respect for traffic rules. Toledo stressed that the new courses of re-education (when the card is withdrawn by points) will try to influence the emotions of individuals, to realize that misuse of mobility can affect the entire family. One of the models, according to Javier Páez, Director of the Unit Accidentology Vehicular University Institute for Automobile Research (INSIA), the Swedish case "Vision Zero" is the most representative as to minimize loss ratios . This program focuses on the idea that "if there is to accept that there may be accidents, at least they can not be deadly and should produce serious injuries, since the loss of life is unacceptable." For this, you have to work hard on road safety education and the design of safety measures in cars and infrastructure. To design a secure environment, this day has wanted to present as a major advance in protection systems pedestrians. In Europe, 15% of traffic fatalities are pedestrians. For this reason, vehicles must have effective security systems, such as active bonnet, absorbing bumpers or pedestrian detectors. With the imminent entry into force of penalty points, on 1 July, the Deputy Director General of Standards and Resources of the DGT, Maximiliano Torres, also it explained the educational function that aims to have the implementation of the new card.

After the good results obtained in Europe, Spain will face this new action plan to try to reduce accidents on the roads.

Torres also recalled that all drivers will begin taking 12 points (except for novice drivers and those who have lost before implantation, which will start with 8 points). According serious or very serious offenses are committed, it will penalize drivers taking away points to the possible withdrawal of driving license.
