Automatic emergency braking: five cars, examination

Emergency braking. It works?Emergency braking. It works?Emergency braking. It works?Emergency braking. It works?

Are effective systems in city emergency braking? We tried different pedestrian protection systems on the test track in Boxberg Bosch (Germany). To do this, we move one doll shaped pedestrian on a table at a rate defined by the path that followed the vehicles tested. The speed of cars was between 30 and 50 km / h, the speed at which we usually move around town.

We chose five vehicles with pedestrian detection and braking emergency to check to what extent these systems are reliable when warning of impending collisions or stop in time to avoid accidents. Although real life is much more complex than the scenarios that can be played with dolls, testing to determine the effectiveness of the systems and their future prospects. Autonomous driving is unthinkable without reliable pedestrian protection systems. In addition, complex security systems have long without being a privilege of expensive luxury cars, and They are implanted even in utilitarian.

For example, him VW Up has a system for only 330 euros on the purchase price, which analyzes the environment in front of the vehicle by a laser sensor at speeds up to 30 km / h. This maximum of 30 km / h because the sensor is able to perceive only ten meters away. If the driver does not react, the VW the brakes, dry braking if necessary.

About Mini, the package provides driving assistance for 1,000 euros, also pedestrian detection and emergency braking function, items such as adaptive speed control system, detection of road signs and beam assist. In reality, of course, because all those wizards use the same set of sensors.

The emergency braking systems tested

Mercedes Class C emergency brakingMercedes C-Class Pre Safe Brake. 2,931 euros

What is it? If serious danger of accident range is detected, the PRE-SAFE Brake warns the driver by optical and acoustic signals to act and thus avoid the accident.

Test result. In the first tests with Mercedes Class C, the system might hold us a surprise. In the experiment designed by us was only possible to obtain good deceleration we value Pre Safe brake with some practice. The solution to the puzzle? Mercedes as much importance is given to prevent false alarms, the status of our experiment, vehicle computers presuppose the minimum pedal movement or direction, the driver has taken command, and remain inactive. The aim of the engineers was that the system put nerves to the driver on the day to day by dint of false alarms. Nevertheless, the automatic brake does work well and very reliably driving against static obstacles. In practice, we have found that it is rare for the system to react without reason.

Assistance package Plus driving the Mercedes Class C. Price

-Blind Spot (only pk. Rearview)

-Brake Assist BAS PLUS with crosses Wizard

-PRE-SAFE (preventive system occupant protection)

Mini CooperMini Cooper. Driving Assistant. 1,000 euros

What is it? The system Driving Assistant warns of any imminent danger. The security package Driving Assistant is a combination of systems based on camera, as the assistant beam, the Speed Limit Info (indicator speed limit) system and the warning output path and warnings collision and pedestrians with brake function in town.

Test result. With 1,000 euros for the Driving Assistant package, the Mini system is one of the cheapest. However, in most cases, at speeds between 30 and 50 km / h, it allows you to reduce the speed at impact to levels that would prevent serious injuries in real life. A 30 km / h, and with a level of overlap of 25 percent, about two meters from the collision point, it was traveling at 20.7 km / h and 23 km / h for a starting speed of 50 km / h. They are good values, because they mean that the Mini, with a deceleration near the gravitational acceleration, would stop shortly before the doll. Overall, it is a highly recommended system.

Driving Assistant package (only with rain sensor and multifunction steering wheel)

-Beam assistant

-Cruise control based on camera (regulates the distance from the vehicle)

-Traffic signal detection

-City braking function (with notice of people and collision warning)

Subaru OutbackSubaru Outback. Eyesight. Standard on automatic Lineartronic

What is it? System driving assistance that helps the driver avoid dangerous situations, reducing the risk of accidents due to distractions and fatigue, and providing a more secure and comfortable ride.

Test result. After tests with the system Eyesight Subaru Outback, we are impressed. Subaru is the only field test to achieve always stop (but always) long before the collision. It almost seems like someone was controlling the Subaru Outback from afar, via satellite and remote control. The Eyesight system overcomes each of the tests with tremendous expertise. In several cases, the Subaru comes to a halt even before the second barrier of light used to measure the residual speed two meters from the obstacle. Even involuntary swerving or uprisings foot of the accelerator pedal by the test driver managed to confuse the system. And best of all false alarms are incredibly slim. Outback unnecessarily stopped only once, even though the car had stopped in front of him had already taken a turn.

Package eyesight

-Pre-crash braking system

-Pre-Crash throttle control

-Adaptive cruise control

-Lane departure warning

-Boot warning vehicle in front of us.

Volvo V60Volvo V60. Pro Brake Assist (2,178 euros)

What is it? The system Brake Assist Pro (IntelliSafe Pro) Volvo tries to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front or to ensure that we will not slide rail.

Test result. Volvo also has occasional lapses from time to time, not all tests react to the doll that approaches, but that would be the exception rather than the rule, and after restarting and go a little path calibration , brake assist always becomes active again and warn of impending collisions time. In this case, the speed while the car reduces or stops before the obstacle (from 30 km / h), or only lightly touches the pedestrian polystyrene (from 50 km / h). The system also works very reliably when the car is approaching static obstacles. The great maturity and state of development of assistance systems Volvo also seen in the fact that false alarms, which can irritate both the driver on the day, are very slim.

Pro package braking assistant with pedestrian detection

-Lane Change Warning (LDW)

-Blind Spot Information (BLIS)

-Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) (DAC only&LDW)

-Driver Alert Control (DAC)

Volkswagen UP!VW Up. Driver Assitance Pack. 330 euros

What is it? The system records the distance to the vehicle in front or stopped vehicles by a laser sensor to a speed of 30 km / h.

Test result. One of the secrets of good assistance systems is the scope of its sensors. When you're able to see a long distance, it is possible to react long before someone sees only ten meters beyond their noses. Drive performance as Pack Plus increases significantly with reduced speed, it may be the reason for the low effectiveness of the system. A 30 km / h, the VW still giving a good romp the doll, and his best result was 23,6 km / h two meters from the impact. Nevertheless, up to 25 km / h, the Driver Pack works so very safe and reliable, leaving the doll standing, whether it was moving or stationary. It is fine for residential and similar areas.

Drive Pack Plus package. Package with emergency braking function
